FAQs & Tips

Cajun Flavors

Instead of a plain turkey-and-sausage soup, this version highlights Cajun flavors. The recipe uses the Cajun “holy trinity”—equal parts bell pepper, celery, and onion—which is the base for many Cajun and Creole dishes like gumbo, jambalaya, and étouffée. That combination builds a savory foundation and pairs naturally with Cajun seasoning and smoked sausage.

What type of sausage should you use?

Andouille sausage is traditional in Cajun cooking and adds a smoky, slightly spicy flavor. Many store-bought andouille links are precooked and similar to smoked sausage. If you can’t find andouille, use another smoked sausage as a substitute.

How to make this Whole30 compatible

To make the soup Whole30 compliant, choose a Whole30-approved sausage without added sugars. Some brands offer sugar-free andouille-style sausages. If a compliant andouille isn’t available, look for other compliant smoked sausages.

Do you need more seasonings?

Leftover turkey is often already seasoned, and both andouille and Cajun seasoning contribute salt and heat. Taste the soup near the end of cooking and adjust salt, pepper, or Cajun seasoning only if needed.

Can you add cream to this?

Yes. For a creamy version, stir in 1 cup of heavy cream or full-fat coconut milk after cooking. Allow the soup to heat gently for 10 minutes with the lid on (appliance off) so the cream melds with the broth.

How do you store leftovers?

Cool soup to room temperature, then refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 4 days. To freeze, cool completely and transfer to freezer-safe containers or bags; freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating, or reheat frozen soup directly in a slow cooker or Instant Pot on a low/warm setting until heated through.

What size slow cooker should you use?

A 6-quart slow cooker works well for this recipe and leaves room for stirring and even cooking. An Instant Pot of similar capacity is suitable when using the pressure-cooker method.
