I love burgers, and my homemade beef burgers are a favorite. They’re simple to make, well seasoned, and full of flavor.
We grill often, and these burgers are always a hit—especially when served with my homemade pita bread. I’m known locally for my bread, and it pairs perfectly with these patties.
Recently I changed my eating habits for health reasons. I still enjoy the foods I love, but I’ve shifted to healthier ingredients and moderation so meals stay delicious without compromising well-being.

Part of that change was choosing better-quality ingredients. I now use zero-calorie sweeteners where appropriate, real butter or a nondairy alternative, and organic fruits, vegetables, and meats whenever possible.
Organic meat, in particular, made a big difference for me. A good cut of beef tastes better and gives you peace of mind about what’s on your plate. After reading extensively about meat sourcing, I prefer to avoid mystery products from the grocery shelf.

Sometimes ground beef in stores appears in different shades, which can be off-putting. That’s often due to mixing older and newer batches. Buying organic or sourcing meat from a trusted butcher or farmer reduces that uncertainty.

If you can, choose meat labeled USDA Organic or buy directly from local farmers you trust. It’s worth the extra care when feeding family and friends.

Homemade Beef Burgers
10 minutes
15 minutes
25 minutes
Ingredients
- 2 Lb Organic Ground Beef
- 1/2 Onion, minced or shredded
- 1 teaspoon Salt, or to taste
- 1 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
- 3 tbsp Plain Bread Crumbs (gluten-free or almond flour for low carb)
- 1/4 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 2 tbsp Water
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil
Instructions
- In a small cup combine the bread crumbs and baking soda. Add the water, stir, and let it sit for a minute so it hydrates.
- Place the ground beef in a mixing bowl. Add the shredded onion, salt, and black pepper.
- Add the hydrated bread crumb mixture to the beef and mix gently until just combined—avoid overworking the meat.
- Drizzle the olive oil over the mixture, cover, and refrigerate for a few hours or overnight to let flavors meld.
- When ready, preheat your grill and form the beef into evenly sized patties.
- Grill the patties about 5–6 minutes per side for medium, or around 7 minutes per side for well done. Times vary with thickness and grill heat.
- When the patties are nearly cooked through, slice the buns and place them cut-side down on the grill atop the patties for a minute to absorb smoky flavor.
- Remove the patties and buns from the grill and assemble your burgers with desired toppings.
Notes
Topping Options:
- Light Thousand Island dressing (optional, about 1/2 tsp per burger)
- Organic green lettuce
- Slice of cheddar cheese
- Sliced kosher dill pickles
- Tomato slices
- Sesame seed buns
