Twenty-one years ago, in October 1997, I was named to Crain’s New York 40 Under 40. At 30 years old, I was the CEO of my own environmental consulting firm.
Crain’s 40 Under 40
My company’s work drew attention from major media, from Fortune Magazine to CNN. At that time my husband and I were exploring the possibility of taking the company public, and I harbored ambitions of serving as a U.S. senator.
CEO on a Trash Can
The photo above shows me at 30, posed on a trash can. Back then our firm was diverting millions of pounds of waste from landfills into recycling streams—a pioneering approach for its time.
Diagnosed with Three Autoimmune Diseases
Within a decade my life took a dramatic turn when I was diagnosed with three autoimmune conditions: celiac disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and, most profoundly, multiple sclerosis. These diagnoses altered my personal and professional trajectory in lasting ways.
My Incredible Family
The journey has been challenging, but I have no regrets. I’ve learned a great deal and built a life filled with unexpected joy. I share a deep, loving partnership with my husband and am the proud parent of two wonderful boys who bring immense happiness to our lives.
This Amazing Community
As my life evolved in ways I never anticipated, many of the changes brought blessings. In 2006 I founded Elana’s Pantry, and since then a supportive and engaged community has grown around it. I feel fortunate to connect with so many caring people every day.
Thank You for Being on this Healing Path with Me
Thank you for joining me on this sometimes wild, often beautiful, and always healing journey. I am profoundly grateful for your support and companionship along the way.
