Make Your Own Pumpkin Spice Candle for Cozy Fall Nights

Make your own DIY pumpkin spice candle this fall with just a few supplies!

There’s nothing like an autumn-scented candle to usher in the cozy feeling of fall. A warm pumpkin spice scent can instantly create that wrapped-up-in-a-blanket, sipping-mulled-cider atmosphere in any room.

When I discovered a pumpkin spice candle scent available from Darby Smart, I knew I had to try it. This DIY pumpkin spice candle is simple and satisfying. Decorate a glass votive with a gold gilding pen, melt and scent soy wax, position a wick, and pour. Candle making feels fancy but is very approachable — it’s an excellent craft for days when you want a quick, creative project. Make several at once for gifts or hostess presents; buying extra wax and votives lets you create multiple candles with minimal extra effort.

Equipment

  • Fall themed stencils

Materials

  • Gold gilding pen
  • Large glass votive
  • Soy candle wax
  • Soy candle wicks
  • Pumpkin spice candle scent
  • Scotch tape
  • Bamboo skewers pencils work too

Instructions

  • Clean the surface of the votive thoroughly. Position a fall-themed stencil on the glass and press the edges so it adheres. Trace or color the design with a gold gilding pen.
  • Let the gold ink dry completely, then gently remove the stencil. Repeat the stenciling on other areas of the glass as desired.
  • Prepare to melt the wax. In a heat-safe Pyrex container, microwave about 4 cups of soy wax in 45-second intervals, stirring between each session. Add another cup of wax and continue microwaving until the wax is fully melted and smooth.
  • Stir in approximately 4 teaspoons of pumpkin spice fragrance oil for a noticeable scent; adjust the amount if you prefer a subtler or stronger aroma. (Tip: you can start with less and add more if needed.)
  • Secure a wick between two bamboo skewers using a small piece of tape to hold it centered. Dip the metal base of the wick briefly into the melted wax, then position it in the center of the votive before the wax sets — this helps anchor the wick when you pour.
  • Carefully pour the scented wax into the decorated votive, watching that the wick stays centered. If it shifts, steady it until the wax starts to cool and firm up.
  • Allow the candle to cure and harden completely at room temperature. Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before lighting. Enjoy your homemade pumpkin spice candle!
