This Sloppy Joes recipe is simple, straightforward, and designed to please picky eaters. I developed it when my kids were young because one of them was extremely selective about food — yet always accepted this sandwich. It became a frequent dinner option for our family. Over time I created a slightly more complex “grown-up” version, but this basic recipe remains a reliable, kid-approved favorite. I also know plenty of adults who are picky eaters and would likely enjoy this too.
Best of all, this recipe can be on the table in about 15 minutes, which is perfect for busy weeknights.
How to make these super simple Sloppy Joes

These Sloppy Joes are extremely easy to prepare.
Start by browning 2 lbs of ground beef in a skillet over medium heat. I often make a larger batch because my husband eats a lot and there are usually leftovers for lunch. You can halve the amounts if you prefer a smaller portion. Ground chicken or turkey also work well as substitutes.
When the meat is cooked through, drain any excess grease if you like — this is optional and based on personal preference.

Stir in:
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
Mix everything well, then let the mixture simmer for a few minutes so the flavors meld while you toast hamburger buns. That’s it—dinner is ready.

There’s nothing fancy about this version — it’s intentionally basic to appeal to fussy eaters. If you have a picky child (or adult), this is a great recipe to add to your regular rotation.
I usually serve these with frozen tater tots or french fries for a hassle-free side. They also go well with pasta salad or mac and cheese, and they make a tasty topping for a baked potato.
