Next time you have overripe bananas, try this refreshing and healthy banana-blueberry nice cream with a hint of almond. It’s perfect for hot days, simple to make and ideal for a snack or light dessert.

Homemade frozen treats — whether ice cream, sorbet or nice cream — feel especially cooling and satisfying in summer. I enjoy experimenting with different fruit combinations and blending them into a creamy, naturally sweet dessert.
A healthy sweet treat
Nice cream is not only cooling but also a healthier alternative to many store-bought frozen desserts. This banana and blueberry version contains no added sugar and very little fat, relying on the natural sweetness of ripe bananas and the flavor of berries.
A great snack or dessert for kids
Because there are no artificial colours, sweeteners or added sugar, this recipe is a kid-friendly treat. It’s reassuring to offer something homemade and nutritious that still tastes indulgent.

Not just for kids
Nice cream is excellent for adults too — a simple change that can make your diet a bit healthier without sacrificing flavor. If you haven’t tried it before, you’ll be surprised how creamy and satisfying it can be.
A great way to use overripe bananas
This is a smart way to avoid food waste. Bananas ripen quickly, especially in warm weather; slicing and freezing them gives you ready-to-blend portions whenever you want nice cream.
Slice bananas before they become overly brown, freeze them on a tray, then transfer to a bag or container. That way you always have frozen fruit on hand for smoothies or frozen desserts.

How do you freeze the bananas?
Slice bananas into roughly 1 cm rounds and arrange them in a single layer on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Freeze for a couple of hours, then transfer the frozen slices to a bag or freezer box for storage.
What ingredients do you need for blueberry nice cream?
This recipe uses just four ingredients:
- Bananas – Use ripe bananas for natural sweetness, but avoid very brown fruit if you want a lighter colour.
- Blueberries – Frozen blueberries work well; you can freeze fresh ones ahead of time or buy them frozen.
- Almond extract – A small amount adds a lovely nutty note. Substitute vanilla or omit if preferred.
- Milk or milk substitute – A little liquid helps the mixture blend smoothly. Use cow’s milk or plant-based milks such as almond, coconut or soya.
What equipment do you need?
No ice cream maker required. A food processor or a powerful blender is enough. A high-speed blender with a sorbet setting will make the job easier, but any sturdy blender will work if you stop to scrape down the sides while blending.

Can you adapt this blueberry nice cream recipe?
Absolutely. Bananas are the base and should be kept, but you can swap blueberries for other berries or fruit. Adjust the flavouring and milk type to suit your taste — almond or coconut milk works nicely if you want a dairy-free version.
The almond extract pairs particularly well with blueberries, lending a subtle Bakewell-like note, but a splash of vanilla is a good alternative.
How hard does it freeze?
Nice cream firms up in the freezer. If it becomes too hard, let it sit at room temperature for 5 minutes before scooping; it softens quickly and becomes scoopable.
How long can you freeze it for?
Stored in an airtight, freezer-proof container, nice cream will keep for up to three months, although it’s best eaten within a few days for optimal texture and flavor.

Why isn’t blueberry nice cream a beautiful purple colour?
Raw blueberry flesh is often pale or greenish rather than deep purple, so the finished nice cream can look more muted than you might expect. If you can find bilberries instead, their reddish-purple flesh produces a richer colour.
