Thanksgiving 2014: Memorable Recipes, Photos, and Family Moments

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope your day was filled with good food and warm moments with family and friends. Our home is usually bustling with relatives, but this year it was a quieter celebration with just my immediate family and my grandparents.

I decided not to sign up for the Thanksgiving half marathon, so I slept in Thursday morning and went for a relaxed 7-mile run in light rain instead. Sometimes extra rest is the best choice.

After the run I had a veggie omelet topped with salsa and pineapple on the side to fuel the day.

For Thanksgiving dinner we enjoyed turkey, homemade mac and cheese, green beans, mashed potatoes, and sweet potato casserole—definitely worth saving room for.

Instead of a traditional pie, we made a hummingbird cake—pineapple, banana, and pecans with cream cheese frosting—and it was delicious.

Every year we usually play a competitive family kickball game. I must have inherited my competitive streak from somewhere—I loved it as a kid, thought it was lame in middle school, and now I enjoy it again. This year the weather was rainy and our cousins couldn’t make it, so instead we stayed inside and played board games.

We’re planning to see Mockingjay tomorrow, so we rewatched Catching Fire to refresh the story before the new movie.

We also celebrated my grandpa’s birthday, which always falls around Thanksgiving, with his favorite dessert—apple crisp.

My grandpa just turned 78 and he’s incredibly active—swimming, biking, or playing tennis most days. He also has a major sweet tooth, and I definitely inherited my love of ice cream from him. He introduced me to Ben & Jerry’s and Dairy Queen Blizzards when I was young, and I’m grateful for that. He reads the blog every day, too.

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I’ll be avoiding the mall tomorrow and likely doing any shopping online, but if you do brave Black Friday crowds, good luck and stay safe.
