Escape with Getaway House: A Complete Guide to Planning Your Cabin Retreat

As we approach a year since COVID-19 reshaped travel, heading out still feels delicate. One company’s tiny-house cabins offer a thoughtful way to disconnect, reflect, and get into nature: Getaway House.

Here’s what it’s like to spend a few days at Getaway House — a travel option that works well during the pandemic.

Writing About Travel During a Pandemic

img 13460 2

It feels unusual to write about travel right now. I had big plans for travel in 2020, but then the pandemic upended everything. Still, I’m glad to be writing about getting away again. I’m hopeful about domestic trips in 2021 and optimistic that wider vaccine availability will make international travel possible again.

Below is an account of a short, careful getaway and how you can experience something similar at a Getaway House location.

Our Trip

Last month Dylan, my sister-in-law Lindsay, and I spent two days and two nights at Getaway House Blake Brook in southern New Hampshire. Lindsay has traveled with us many times and this short escape was relaxed and restorative. We loved the quiet and the chance to be outdoors.

COVID Safety for Visiting New Hampshire

Pandemic rules change often, so check current guidelines before you travel. At the time of our trip, there was no quarantine requirement for travelers from neighboring New England states, which made travel from Massachusetts straightforward for us. Lindsay, who is fully vaccinated, also chose to get tested before the trip for extra peace of mind.

Always verify the latest state guidance before traveling and follow local safety measures.

Travel looks different now, and properties like Getaway House make social distancing easier. With sites across the country, Getaway provides private cabins set in nature. The Blake Brook location — called the Boston Getaway by some — is one of several options, with other locations in states like Georgia, Texas, Pennsylvania, New York, D.C., Oregon, Illinois, and California.

Getaway’s staff use contactless check-in and check-out. You receive a code to enter your cabin, eliminating in-person interactions. Cabins are thoroughly cleaned by staff in PPE between guests, and strict check-in times ensure the space is ready and sanitized before arrival.

The Cabins

You can choose between one-bed or two-bed lofted cabins. Each cabin sits roughly 50–100 feet from the next, has AC, heating, and hot water, and is furnished to be comfortable and cozy. During our stay we saw very few people and appreciated enforced quiet hours.

Inside, the cabins include books and games, a kitchenette with a two-burner stove and mini fridge, basic cooking utensils, a kettle, dishware, a small dining area, toiletries, towels, and even a phone lockbox to encourage unplugging. The beds were exceptionally comfortable and large windows bring the outdoors in, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

Outside each cabin you’ll find a picnic table, fire pit with a cooking grate, and seating. Our welcome included a complimentary mini s’mores kit and a note on the table. Firewood, starters, and sand for icy conditions are available if needed.

Getaway Blake Brook is pet-friendly.

Activities in New Hampshire

We love New Hampshire year-round. Because we visited in winter, we paid attention to trail conditions and wore microspikes for snowy hikes. Fortunately, we had good weather and sunshine for our walks.

Favorite activities near the Getaway location (within about 1–2 hours) vary by season:

Winter Activities: Skiing at nearby resorts, exploring the frozen Flume Gorge, or hiking Mount Major for views over Lake Winnipesaukee.

Spring Activities: Enjoy spring hikes or strolls through towns like North Conway; local spots offer gluten-free options.

Summer Activities: Pick strawberries at Schartner Farms, hike Franconia Notch, swim at Lower Falls along the Kancamagus Highway, or visit Mount Washington by car, foot, or rail.

Fall Activities: Leaf peeping at Cannon Mountain and Lonesome Lake, stopping in Wolfeboro for coffee or hot chocolate, or taking scenic drives to admire fall colors.

Gluten-Free Options

One advantage of staying in a cabin is being able to prepare simple gluten-free meals. Be cautious when using a shared kitchen and follow precautions to avoid cross-contact.

Cabinettes typically include plates, bowls, cutlery, a kettle, basic seasonings, and a few utensils. You can bring your own cooking tools or thoroughly clean what’s provided. Bringing a clean sponge and keeping supplies separate helps reduce cross-contact risk.

On our stay we ate granola bars, fruit, and eggs for breakfast; simple sandwiches and snacks for lunch; and homemade pasta for dinner (I used gluten-free pasta while the others used regular). For dessert we enjoyed s’mores with my gluten-free graham crackers. Plan your meals according to your comfort level — everyone’s needs and tolerances differ.

If you prefer dining out, research local gluten-free-friendly restaurants in the area before you go.

Cost & Budget

Getaway Blake Brook can feel pricey depending on timing. Midweek rates were around $230 per night, while weekend nights ran roughly $350–$360. Splitting costs, visiting during midweek, or using promotions can reduce the price. We benefited from a healthcare worker discount for Lindsay.

Because we cooked most meals, spent time hiking (free), and drove from the Boston area, our total cost for the trip was approximately $600–$700 for the two of us — reasonable for a brief, restorative escape.

To help bring down the cost of your trip, consider available discounts for first-time stays.

Final Thoughts

This getaway was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with family and nature. The style of private cabins feels particularly well-suited to current travel needs, since social distancing is easy and the settings are peaceful.

I’d happily return in spring, summer, or fall — and I’m already imagining gluten-free s’mores by the fire.
