Enjoy a taste of the tropics year-round with this tiki passion pineapple rum cocktail.

I love tiki cocktails. The blend of rum with pineapple and bright citrus tastes like a vacation in a glass.
What makes a great tiki cocktail?
A well-made tiki drink balances sweet, sour, bitter, and boozy elements.

Passion Fruit Cocktail
Classic tiki drinks often have playful, mysterious names — Zombie, Navy Grog, Painkiller, Fog Cutter. This one is straightforward: Tiki Passion Pineapple Rum Cocktail. No riddles, just bright tropical flavors that make you think of endless summer and carefree vacations.
Tiki cocktail ingredients
This is an approachable entry into tiki territory. I use a single dark or aged rum rather than the multiple rums found in many traditional tiki recipes. The cocktail combines passionfruit, pineapple, lime, and orange with a turbinado simple syrup and dark rum.
Shake everything with ice, strain into a glass over fresh ice, and garnish with mint, citrus slices, and a maraschino cherry for a festive finish. It’s simple, tasty, and crowd-friendly.

Passionfruit juice vs. passionfruit puree
Passionfruit goes by several names — passion fruit or passionfruit in most of the US, and lilikoi or liliko’i in Hawaii. If you can find fresh passionfruit, use it — it brightens the drink beautifully. Otherwise, frozen passionfruit puree or pulp works well.
Quick definitions to avoid confusion:
- Passion fruit juice — a beverage made from passionfruit combined with water and sweetener.
- Passion fruit puree — strained passionfruit liquid, typically without seeds and unsweetened.
- Pulp — everything inside the fruit, including seeds and juice.
Recommended rums
I prefer dark or aged rums for this cocktail. Good options include Mount Gay, Diplomatico, Flor de Caña, and Clément. A spiced rum can also be used if you like that flavor profile.

Ingredients
- ¾ oz passionfruit puree,* see notes
- 1 oz pineapple juice
- 1 oz fresh-squeezed lime juice
- 1 oz orange juice
- ¾ oz turbinado simple syrup recipe follows
- 2 oz dark rum of choice
Instructions
-
Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Add passionfruit puree, pineapple juice, lime juice, orange juice, turbinado simple syrup, and dark rum. Cover and shake until well chilled. Strain into a serving glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with citrus slices, mint, and a maraschino cherry.
Turbinado Simple Syrup:
-
Combine 1 part water with 2 parts turbinado sugar. Bring to a simmer and stir until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature, then refrigerate in an airtight container. The syrup will be thicker than standard simple syrup.
Notes
- Frozen passionfruit puree works well and is widely available; thaw small portions as needed. Passionfruit is quite tart on its own but mellows when combined with sugar and other juices.
- Check grocery freezer sections for passionfruit pulp or puree if fresh fruit isn’t available.
